City
begins economic-planning process
The New
Mexican
An economic-planning
process intended to help the city of Santa Fe take advantage of new
opportunities and increase the income of residents will kick off
Thursday in a meeting at Sweeney Center.
Mayor Larry Delgado,
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and Angelos G. Angelou of Angelou Economics,
the company hired by the city to develop a new economic plan, will
take part.
The meeting, which is from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.,
is open to the public.
“Everybody is invited,’’ said Joe
Hoback, a member of the city’s Economic Development Review
Committee. “We want to be inclusive.’’
Over the next six
months, Angelou Economics will analyze Santa Fe’s economy, identify
specific business sectors to target, write a five-year economic and
marketing strategy and lead a city-wide economic
summit.
“Santa Fe’s economy is highly dependent on government
and tourism,’’ said Delgado in a statement. “It is our hope to use
this economic-planning process to create a viable strategy to
diversify our city’s business base and improve possibilities for
higher paying jobs.’’
Among the industries the economic
planning process will consider is Santa Fe informatics industry.
This industry involves developing software to process raw
data and can lead to new drugs or new ways of managing supply
chains.
Santa Fe has an estimated 40 informatics companies
with an annual economic impact of more than $40 million.

economic-development planner Steve Whitman at
